Dating your employees?.(well at least getting to know them)

The first days, and weeks of a new employee are a nervous time for both parties. As an employer we also ask questions of ourselves.. did we represent ourselves accurately in the recruitment process, how is the new person experiencing the organization, will they fit in? On-boarding and induction, or what I like to call the ‘dating’ phase is really important to getting close to having a truly engaged team long term. I know at RedBalloon we have a rigorous…

Attachment before engagement

There is not one business owner I’ve met who isn’t talking about the attraction and retention of great people. The conversation then soon turns to engagement and how ‘into’ and organization some one is. I was speaking recently to Anthony Sork of Sork HC – and he mentioned that in his opinion there was a missing – really putting the cart before the horse. Does the work day ever end?

There is an absolute melding between what is work life and what is leisure. The challenge for employers is to make the work week as interesting as the weekend, because with blackberries, mobile phones and email – leisure time is becoming more like work. There is a bigger movement at hand – and that is Generation Why? – It is not in fact a generation as such more that people are really questioning the purpose of what they do – and what they do needs to align to…

Staying ahead of the game.

I’ve been writing posts over the past few days  about the things that I learned in traveling to the Entrepreneurs Organization global conference in Vegas. I many more to write. But it struck me, where do you get information and insights locally. I personally learn most when I listen to people. Suzy Dafnis and the Australian Businesswomen’s network has an event coming up – and the run down of speakers looks pretty great. It is on 10 November – and…

Are you having a good time every day?

Are you having a good time every day?

I just attended a keynote from the author of Now Discover your Strengths – Marcus Buckingham. His job in part was to entertain – but he had a strong message, that is the power of positivity. “Build on your strengths and manage around your weaknesses.” If we are feeling good about our selves then our level of engagement goes up. Quite simply love what you do and do what you love. He posed the question “At work do you have…
